A woman pulled from a car submerged in fast-moving water near the edge of Niagara Falls has died, New York State Park Police said Wednesday.
Police said the unnamed local woman in her 60s was pulled from her vehicle by a rescue swimmer, suspended from a US Coast Guard helicopter, about 50 miles from American Falls. yard.
“We’ve never had a vehicle in the water near this edge,” New York State Park Police Captain Chris Rola said at a news conference.
The woman, who was the only person in the car, was spotted floating in the river by witnesses, Rola said.
Investigators believe the vehicle plunged into the river between the pedestrian and vehicular bridge, but it is unclear what circumstances led to the incident.
Rola said the coast guard was deployed after police were unable to successfully withdraw. Drones are also used to determine if there are additional people in the vehicle and get information about license plates, he added.
