Police officer injured in crash on Almeda Genoa and Radio Road while blocking lanes

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A Houston police officer is recovering after being hit by a car Saturday while working on a scene of a previous accident.

The crash happened at 10 p.m. on Almeda Genoa near Radio Road

Officials blocked lanes as CenterPoint Energy crews worked on a post that was hit by a vehicle in another accident.

Houston Police Department said one of the officers was in their squad car with emergency lights on when two other officers standing to the side noticed a vehicle moving at high speed.

“They heard his brakes squeal, they started running from the vehicles and the suspect vehicle crashed into the police car. The officer there sustained some head injuries and some leg and back injuries,” Lt. Ignacio Izaguirre.

The officer was taken to a local hospital where her injuries were treated. Izaguirre said the officer spoke but complained of head injuries and breathing difficulties after the impact.

The other two officers were not injured in the crash.

The driver of the car was also taken to a hospital. Investigators later followed up to determine if alcohol or drugs had caused the accident.
