WARSAW (Reuters) – Poland is ready to deploy all of its MIG-29 jets at Germany’s Ramstein airbase and make them available to the United States, and is urging other NATO members owning aircraft of the type to do the same The Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday.

US lawmakers on Monday urged President Joe Biden’s administration to facilitate the transfer of fighter jets from Poland and other NATO and Eastern European countries to Ukraine, after a request made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday.

“The authorities of the Republic of Poland … are ready to station immediately and free of charge all of their MIG-29 jets at Ramstein Air Force Base and make them available to the US government,” the ministry said.

“At the same time, Poland is asking the United States to provide us with used aircraft with the appropriate capabilities. Poland is ready to immediately determine the terms of purchase of the aircraft,” the statement said.

Poland supports Kyiv with defensive weapons but has said it will not send jets to Ukraine as it is not a direct party to the conflict between Ukraine – which is not a NATO ally – and Russia.

“…all decisions about the delivery of offensive arms must be taken by the whole of NATO and on a unanimous basis,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said Tuesday during a joint press conference with his Norwegian counterpart in Oslo.

“So we’re ready to surrender our entire fleet of jet fighters to Ramstein, but we’re not ready to do anything ourselves because, as I said, we’re not involved in this war,” he added.
