PlayStation Inventors Start Against Metaverse

Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg are currently promoting the metaverse concept in a major way, but a lot of people are having a hard time buying the concept. One of those people is PlayStation inventor Ken Kutagari. In an interview with Bloomberg News, Kutagari questioned the concept of the metaverse and how it would allow users to interact with each other. Kutagari questioned not only the concept itself, but also how users would have to wear VR headsets to interact with the metaverse, saying they “isolated you from the real world.”

“Being in the real world is very important, but the metaverse is about making it lifelike in the virtual world and I can’t see the point of doing that,” Kutagari told Bloomberg News. “Would you rather be a polished avatar instead of the real you? That’s basically no different from anonymous message boards.”

The concept of the metaverse will be a tough sell for those who use it. While the appeal of VR has grown over the past few years, headsets can be frustrating for some users and can even cause nausea. Kutagari sees a different future. With his startup Ascent, Kutagari believes cutting-edge robotics will be able to “blend the real world with cyberspace in a seamless, minimally utility-like fashion like a Star Wars hologram.” , according to Bloomberg.

While Sony was hesitant about the concept of video games, Kutagari saw a lot of potential. Kutagari began a clandestine partnership with Nintendo on sound chips for the Super Nintendo, and was nearly fired by Sony when executives found out. CEO Norio Ohga eventually agreed to Kutagari, and the working relationship with Nintendo resulted in the development of the Play Station CD-Rom attachment for the SNES. After his relationship with Nintendo fell apart, Kutagari created the PlayStation console, which would go on to revolutionize the video game industry. It remains to be seen whether Kutagari’s latest project will be nearly as successful, but the creator clearly has a way of predicting technology trends!
