Paul Pogba showed class but Maguire erred to let the team down in the Reds’ draw with Burnley

MANCHESTER UNITED dropped out of the top 4 after the story of two rounds at Turf Moor.

The Reds put on a much improved performance in the first 45 minutes, showing that they will recover well from Exit FA Cup on Friday night.

But they were strangled by a Burnley team that looked like it was reborn in the second half, surrendering Paul Pogba handed to them when Jay Rodriguez pounced on some of Harry Maguire’s fearsome defense to level.

Here’s how SunSport’s Etienne Fermie rates each United performers in the night.

DAVID DE GEA – 5/10

No chance with Jay Rodriguez’s equalizer. Downhill quickly to deny Wout Weghorst a precise attempt from close range.

The Spaniard is rarely checked by Sean Dyche’s faction.

DIOGO DALOT – 6

An excellent footwork in the penalty area almost made Bruno Fernandes score in the first half.

The Portuguese has earned his place, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka may struggle to return to the team.

RAPHAEL VARANE – 6

A brilliant header gave Man United the lead in the 12th minute, only, the effort was scrapped.

The Frenchman was beaten by his defensive partner overnight.

HARRY MAGUIRE – 3

Penalty for blocking Rodriguez in an offside position, as Varane’s goal was blown.

The team captain was beaten too easily by the Clarets to equalize for them. Booked for a clumsy challenge on Weghorst.

LUKE SHAW – 6

The perfect save helped Pogba open the scoring. Then create a brightly lit cross to find Marcus Rashford who then went over to let Ben Mee score his own goal… before the goal was disallowed.

England internationally saw his influence wane during the second period.

SCOTT McTOMINAY – 6

Keep the ball ticking for the first 45 minutes, with his Burnley opposite numbers barely putting a glove on him.

But it was a completely different story in the second half, when the Scot was suddenly knocked out by the people in the pub and the blue.

PAUL POGBA – 8

A tight finish opened the scoring for United 19 minutes into the match. Serious is said to have fouled the assist for Mee to score an own goal, resulting in disallowation.

The Frenchman, making his first Premier League appearance since October, showed his class as he turned the Red Devils into an all-round midfielder.

MARCUS RASHFORD – 6

Nick Pope’s early shot on goal. Favorable pass for Shaw in Pogba’s assist. Mee had an own goal, but the goal was denied for a very light foul. Denied again by a clever Pope stop at 40 minutes.

The winger was more lively than many of his performances this season, and nearly scored Varane after a slick dribble.

BRUNO FERNANDES – 5

Perfect part distribution in inches for Varane setup, just for target is not allowed.

It’s easy to forget that the Portuguese was even brought on in the second half, so he lacked influence in the game.

JADON SANCHO – 7

Made it difficult for Connor Roberts with a tricky dribble on the left wing in the first half.

Like his teammates, was nullified after half-time but could be encouraged by his performance in the opening 45 minutes.

EDINSON CAVANI – 5

Denied at empty range by a brilliant save by Pope.

Another quiet evening for Uruguayans.

STORY

Cristiano Ronaldo (for Cavani, 68 years old) – 5

The Portuguese took the lead before having a good chance.

Jesse Lingard (for McTominay, 80 years old) – N / A

Not enough time to affect the game in this rare outing.

Anthony Elanga (for Rashford, 85 years old) – N / A

Like Lingard, there wasn’t really a chance to make much of an impact.
