A “PARTY animal” mother who left her two sons home alone to drink was dubbed a “neighbor from hell.”
Demi Heffernan, 25, had been drinking when she disappeared from her property in Bridlington, East Yorks – leaving her two boys, aged four and six, locked in for two hours.
The “terrified” brothers were found on the street after being abandoned last year.
The youths had managed to climb out of a window after leaning a chair against the wall before knocking on a neighbor’s door in “desperation” at 12.15am.
The affected resident immediately alerted police when he saw Heffernan being taken away in handcuffs.
The single mother was handed a 10-month suspended sentence in Hull court yesterday after she admitted neglecting her child.
When approached by The Sun today, Heffernan seemed unimpressed and simply said: “I don’t want to talk about it. I have nothing to say.”
Horrified neighbors described their behavior as “disgusting” and branded them “terrible”.
A local, who asked not to be named for fear of retribution, told The Sun: “She’s an absolute nightmare neighbor.”
Another added: “I absolutely hate leaving your kids like this. She’s a terrible neighbor.
“She’s loud and there’s always drama, like fights with friends and stuff like that. She definitely likes a drink. I haven’t seen her kids in ages.”
Other residents on the street called her a “neighbor from hell”.
One said: “I know she’s a party animal and very loud. She used to be heard arguing with her boyfriend all the time.
“I think it’s absolutely horrible to leave your kids like this. I haven’t seen her with her kids in ages.”
In addition to a 10-month suspended sentence, Heffernan must do 200 hours of unpaid work.
Hull Crown Court heard Heffernan’s negligence could have resulted in her boys being kidnapped or a fire breaking out at the house.
Prosecutor Richard Thompson said she was drinking at a friend’s nearby before leaving at 10:30 p.m. to put her children to bed.
She reportedly wanted to return but by 11.30pm there was still no sign of her.
She’s loud and there’s always drama, like fights with friends and stuff like that. She definitely likes a drink.
Forty-five minutes later, her six-year-old son knocked on the neighbor’s door while his younger brother continued down the street.
Police were called at 12:30 a.m., but Heffernan did not return home until around 1:15 a.m.
Mr Thompson said: “The children were tired and desperate. They were taken to their grandparents to be looked after.”
Heffernan denied she was a heavy drinker and neglected her children, and accused her concerned neighbor of “trying to frame her”.
Mitigatingly, Michele Stuart-Lofthouse said Heffernan was “remorseful” and that the incident was “the biggest regret of her life”.
Judge John Thackray QC told her: “They made the decision at 10.30pm to leave two young children aged four and six at home.
“It must have been extremely scary for her. They were described by police as distressed when they arrived at the scene around 1am.
“They were seen on the street. That’s the actual damage you caused.
“What would have happened if there had been a fire?
“What would have happened if a stranger had taken one of your children?”
