surveillance 2Kiriko’s new heroine becomes a symbol of the big problem of the microtransaction sequel, as players have discovered the ridiculous amount of time it will take to unlock all of her cosmetics with coins earned in the game.
Kiriko, the first all-new hero added to Overwatch 2, features a variety of cosmetics, from new skins to weapon charms and voiceovers. These cosmetics are purchased with coins, which can be earned either through play or by purchasing packs for real money.
Details on Overwatch 2 hero Kiriko’s cosmetic prizes
Kiriko’s non-seasonal unlocks currently total 15,600 coins, as detailed on Reddit. The unlocks cost as follows:
- 5 skins: 2200 coins
- 3 emotes: 1500 coins
- 5 souvenirs: 2500 coins
- 5 Weapon Charms: 3500 coins
- 2 winning poses: 600 coins
- 9 voice lines: 900 coins
- 10 sprays: 1000 coins
- 2 Highlight Intros: 1400 coins
Currently, completing all 11 of the game’s weekly challenges awards you a total of 60 coins. That means it would take 260 weeks to earn enough coins to get all of the unlocks for Kiriko, except for the ones that are distributed via Twitch drops and achievements, which would only increase the time you have to grind require.
On the other hand, players can go to the in-game shop (if it works for them and isn’t missing like it is for many users) and use real money for one of its packs to get coins. Currently, the Overwatch 2: Watchpoint Pack offers 2000 coins and a bunch of old Overwatch skins for $39.99, while the starter pack offers 500 coins and a Doomfist skin for $4.99. There is also a Kiriko Legendary Offer Bundle containing five cosmetic items for 200 coins.
Given how slowly coins are earned just from playing, this is likely Blizzard’s incentive to encourage players to purchase the packs or bundles with real money. But even if a player buys the packs, they’ll still only have 2,500 coins – a far cry from the 15,600 coins required to snag all of Kiriko’s purchasable cosmetics.
