Overwatch 2 pros are torn in the new push game mode as players debate a 2CP return

With the Overwatch 2 beta now in full swing, pro players have been practicing the new Push game type for weeks. While the Assault (2CP) replacement was announced with much fanfare, a number of top players and streamers are now opposed, with some arguing that the earlier mode was actually better.

For the past six years, 2CP cards have been a major source of frustration for Overwatch players. Despite a series of updates, map changes, and in some cases even map removals, the mode often referred to as “Coin Toss” hasn’t improved.

As a result, Blizzard confirmed the mode would be controversial leak with the launch of Overwatch 2. Taken its place Pressa new game type with a single objective in which teams compete to advance on a specific map.

Now that the first beta is on us and them 2022 season of the Overwatch League has started, players of all skill levels have had some hands-on time with Fresh mode. Though many were excited, select pro gamers and streamers alike have now activated the newcomer.

Push is the only new game mode in Overwatch 2, replacing 2CP from the original game.

“After playing the beta and push mode for 2 weeks I have to say: 2 CP > push. I said so,” argued Florida Mayhem streamer ‘Jay3’ on Twitter, sparking a heated debate on social media.

While many fans were quick to question his stance, others in the community chimed in to reiterate the sentiment. “[Facts]2 CP was fine, change my mind,” Houston Outlaws pro Danteh responded.

Now that he’s had his first push match at the highest level of competition, a match that ended in loss to the Toronto Defiant, Danteh doesn’t seem too fond of the latest twist.

“The game mode itself isn’t bad,” chipped in Caleb McGarvey, a former pro coach. Instead, his problem stems from the “terrible maps” that were present at launch in Overwatch 2’s first beta.

Of course, this chatter continued on both Twitter and Reddit as players bickered over the mode. For some, it’s already living up to expectations as an excellent replacement for the long-controversial 2CP.

“I really enjoy push,” said one player added to the conversation. “I like the fact that it always feels possible to come back and win. 2CP felt unwinnable more often than other game modes if you made a mistake or two on defense.”

However, others weren’t sold quite as well, claiming the mode wasn’t quite competitive in its current state.

“Right now I think 2 CP is better,” another player explained on reddit. “But Push has potential to be refined. A few minor tweaks to the scoring system would be better,” they claimed.

While the new mode was a welcome addition for some, others believe 2CP is still superior. While the game type remains active in the original Overwatch for now, there’s nothing to say how long it can last before Blizzard completely erases all traces of the original game.
