‘Out of the blue’: Glenn Hoddle says Liverpool are ‘surprised’ by double transfer deal

Glenn Hoddle says Liverpool were surprised by this summer’s transfer sales of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to Saudi Arabia.
Fans were expecting a change in Liverpool’s midfield this summer – with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita making their way to the exit.
But then it was the turn of the ever-expanding Saudi Pro League for Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, with Hoddle claiming the England midfielder’s sale came, he said, “out of the blue”. Premier League Productions (08/13/23 at 13:35).
Many believe the departure of these two is one reason Liverpool put down a British record transfer fee for Moises Caicedo but the player then turned it down for Chelsea.
That has put the club under pressure as they are now lacking in the middle of the park, including the necessary defensive spirit, as they showed in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
England legend Hoddle spoke about Liverpool’s transfer sales this summer and why they delayed the pressure on Caicedo.

“I think from Liverpool’s point of view they got a surprise from what happened with Hendo and Fabinho,” Hoddle said. “They didn’t expect that.
“All of a sudden they have a bigger wallet than before. Be whatever they wanted, and the reward. I think maybe that’s why they didn’t use him (Caicedo) very early on like Chelsea did. That came out of the blue (Henderson sale).”

More Liverpool players going to Saudi Arabia?
This could be yet another nightmare for the Reds in the summer transfer window as the Saudis are now knocking on Mohamed Salah’s door – what’s worse is that he’s open-minded about the move.
And as if that weren’t enough, Alisson Becker, who was Liverpool’s top player last season, is also attracting interest and is once again open to a trip to the Middle East.
If those two leave before the window closes, Liverpool may not recover and fear they could have a Chelsea-like season.
