Oscars 2022: Rachel Zegler jokes about not being invited while presenting the award

Rachel Zegler joked about her missing an invitation to the 2022 Oscars while presenting the award for Achievement in Visual Effects.

the Westside Story Star revealed last week that she was not invited to the ceremony despite starring in Steven Spielberg’s musical, which has seven nominations.

After a backlash on social media, the Academy invited Zegler to be a presenter at the ceremony.

Before announcing the winner of the award, co-host Jacob Elordi said: “It’s definitely a bit scary to be up here. I grew up in Australia and never thought I’d be on this stage.”

“And I never thought I’d be here six days ago,” said Zegler. “Dreams can really come true… pretty quickly.”

Among the first winners of the evening was Westside Story‘s Ariana DeBose, who became the first openly queer woman of color to win an acting Oscar for her role in Steven Spielberg’s musical remake.

Accepting the award, she said, “You see an openly queer woman of color, an Afro-Latina, who has found her strength and life through art. And I think that’s what we want to celebrate here. So if anyone has ever questioned your identity, I promise you – there is indeed a place for us.”
