Oscars 2022: Lady Gaga Helps Liza Minnelli Present Oscar for Best Picture and Whispers ‘I Got You’

LOS ANGELES — Though the larger talk surrounding the 2022 Oscars included a particularly pugnacious moment, the night ended on a sweet note: Lady Gaga and Liza Minnelli presented the Best Picture award.

While the Academy previously announced the House of Gucci star’s attendance at the Oscars, Minnelli’s attendance came as a surprise. The 76-year-old actress cheered and smiled from her wheelchair as the audience at the Dolby Theater on Sunday night applauded the duo’s performance.

“Do you see that? The public, they love you,” Gaga told Minnelli.

The legendary actress’ performance at the 2022 Oscars marked the 50th anniversary of “Cabaret.” Minnelli won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of comedian Sally Bowles in the 1972 film.

As Minnelli nervously began shuffling her notes, her 36-year-old co-host assured, “I get it,” patting her on the back.

She then started coming up with a pre-taped list of best picture nominees, but Gaga rushed in again to push the presentation.

“All night we watched highlights of the 10 best picture, you know, nominated for best picture, awards. Now we’re going to show you something else?” Minnelli said, looking at Gaga.

“We’re going to tell you now who the nominees are,” Gaga added.

“Oh good,” Minnelli chuckled.

Before her mics went dead, Gaga leaned in to Minnelli and whispered, “I got you.”

“I know,” she replied.

Back in front of the camera after the Best Picture nominees were named, Gaga held the award announcement envelope at Minnelli’s eye level.

“And the Oscar goes to…” Gaga began.

“OK, ‘CODA’,” Minnelli read, at first lightly, then cheered up to applause from the crowd.

Sian Heder’s CODA, a deaf family drama starring Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur, Emilia Jones and Daniel Durant, is the first film with a largely deaf cast to win the Best Picture award.

In addition to her Oscar win, Minnelli was nominated for Best Actress for her role in The Sterile Cuckoo. Gaga was also nominated for Best Actress for her role in “A Star Is Born” and won Best Original Song for the film’s breakout hit “Shallow.”

Monday is also Lady Gaga’s 36th birthday.
