The Bucs get what they want from Brady, and him from them. Brady won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay last year, beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Now, NFC may have a playoff team with little to worry about – opening the door for the Bears.
But, that’s not the immediate reason why this retirement affects a team like Chicago. With Brady retiring, that means there will be a significant number of offensive freelancers that may choose to sign elsewhere.
With Tom Brady retiring, the Chicago Bears now have a much bigger chance of signing a free agent like Chris Godwin.
One of the recipients of Brady over the past two seasons has been Chris Godwin. Along with Mike Evans, Godwin became reliable when they arrived. The duo may be the most prolific receiver pair Brady has ever worked with. Sure, Randy Moss was better on her own, no doubt.
However, now the Bucs may have trouble trying to bring Godwin back for future seasons. Last season, Godwin played under the franchise label. Unfortunately, his season ended with a Tear ACL end of the year. He will be entering free agency in March and most likely, could make less money than he was before the injury.
Maybe, trauma doesn’t mean much. It doesn’t make much sense that Allen Robinson suffered exactly the same trauma. The Bears still signed him a pretty rich contract four years ago.
Even if the Bucs offered Godwin a multi-year contract, he would have a lot of uncertainty in midfield without Brady.
In Chicago, however, Godwin will know exactly who is leading the team under him. That’s Justin Fields’ team – and a receiver like Godwin would be the perfect addition to the sophomore quarterback.
In particular, in the past three seasons with Tampa, Godwin has become one of the best players in football. The 25-year-old has accumulated 249 touches from 3,276 yards and 21 touches in that span.
Godwin, along with Darnell Mooney, would immediately make Fields the top duo in football.
However, it’s not just Godwin who can choose to sign with another team. Tampa has a few other important freelancers who can help the Bears.
Center Ryan Jensen and tight OJ Howard are both unrestricted free agents, and both will be huge additions to the Bears.
Without Brady, the Bucs would have had a hard time bringing in some of their top freelance assault agents. Their direction is currently mixed, while the Bears are establishing a clear vision under new general manager Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus.
