What was Shanks’ bounty when he met Luffy?

Shanks had a sizable bounty on his head of 1,000,400,000 belly at the time he first met Luffy.

While this isn’t explicitly mentioned in the Netflix series, it was acknowledged in the movie One Piece: Red.

The couple’s paths first crossed when the Red Hair Pirates went to Luffy’s hometown of Windmill Village. Being part of an already established crew by the time he was at East Blue, it’s no surprise that his capture could hold such promising rewards for those brave enough to capture him.

Looking much further into the future, as Luffy establishes himself as leader of the Straw Hats, he demands a bounty of up to 3,000,000,000, which is far higher than Shanks’ bounty when he met him as a boy.

What is the highest bounty in One Piece?

The highest bounty in all of One Piece is actually 5,564,800,000 berries and is held by Pirate King Gol D Roger, captain of the Roger Pirates.

That makes sense considering he was the most influential and well-known of all pirates in franchise history.

The Netflix series is not about his bounty, however it was mentioned in Episode 958 of the anime. In second place is Whitebeard with a bounty of 5,046,000,000 berries, and in third place is Kaido with 4,6111,100,000.

“It’s an iconic element in the manga”

Speaking of Shanks and Luffy, Netflix “One Piece” director Mark Jobst recently discussed adapting part of their first meeting in a revealing conversation interview.

“It’s an iconic element in the manga,” Mark began explaining to Cinema Daily US. “So it was one of the very few scenes where I really wanted to clearly relate to the overall framework of the manga.

“We didn’t want to emulate it in live action [version] the same frames as in the manga. We wanted to honor his spirit, but this particular scene has such iconic imagery. I felt it was really important that we got it right.”

However, he adds that it was important for the production to get the previous scenes with Shanks to the point. “It’s really important that the energy and friendship between Shanks and Luffy was built beforehand to create this scene. If we didn’t have that, this scene wouldn’t have the impact I think it has…”

One Piece is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.

The entry One Piece’s Shanks already had a sizeable bounty on its head when it met Luffy and debuted on HITC.
