One last trip for the CEO of MARQ-TRAN as she prepares to retire after 40 years

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WJMN) – The chief executive officer of the Marquette County Transportation Authority (Marq-Tran) is set to retire after 40 years.

Delynn Klein began her career as a bus driver in October 1981 before Marquette and Ishpeming changed the route to Marq-Tran in 1985.

“I guess one of my fondest memories is having bingo, and I would start my shift in the afternoon and pick up all the bingo ladies and take them home. at night and it’s one of those fun times. ,” said Klein.

She has been driving for about seven years and transitioned to the position of chief executive officer, which she served for 17 years, and is now chief executive officer for 16 years.

“It’s so good. It’s a pretty unique industry and I think just as it grows, there’s always something different, there’s always something coming. There are many technologies that come into existence. That’s always good because it’s fun to do something different.

“I mean, my job is never the same every day and never is a shipping job, you never know what will happen and I love it. However, parts of it remain the same, you must consider procurement and funding to ensure that we have everything needed to serve the community. ”

Klein says Marq-Tran is more than just a public transit service, it’s also a way to give back to your community.

“Without public transportation, a lot of people would have no way to get their basic needs, their basic needs met, and we can do that. that and we’re so proud of it, that we can help someone. You know, a lot of times we’re the first if there’s an accident because we’re on the road too much, our driver will report it. I mean a lot of things, we are an asset to the community and I’m proud of that and I think all of our employees are very proud of that. It’s a good job because you know you’re helping people. “

One of Klein’s greatest achievements was the construction of a transit hub in downtown Marquette.

“I built the transfer center and it was fun. That is a challenge. I have never built a building before and especially for the public. So it’s a lot of fun, shopping for it, getting the architect and engineering, the construction company, all of that is fun. I think our building turned out very well and it’s very used in the community. “

As Klein retires for the New Year, she looks forward to spending time with her grandchildren and traveling.

“It’s been a great career and I love it. I will miss everyone, I really am. But I need to go find other things to do, and it’s time for the younger people to step in and make their mark if you will. I mean I never, ever intended to spend my entire career in transportation but it was a great trip, literally. ”
