BEIJING (Reuters) – The Beijing Winter Olympics will largely rely on temporary and charter flights from cities such as Tokyo and Singapore to bring athletes to the Games due to travel restrictions. China and amid concerns about COVID-19, an official said on Friday.
“The Omicron variant has spread to more than 50 countries, according to WHO data,” said Zhang Liang, an official with the Beijing Olympics organizing committee.
“The epidemic prevention and control situation is still severe and complicated.”
The Beijing Olympics, scheduled to begin on February 4, will rely on charter and temporary flights to bring athletes and other Olympics attendees, with commercial flights as a supplement, Zhang said.
Athletes and other attendees will have to arrive at Beijing Capital International Airport before entering a closed loop, strictly isolated from other parts of China, where they will stay in the whole time before leaving.
He said Chinese and foreign airlines will participate in organizing these temporary flights from cities such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Paris and Tokyo.
“During the peak period of arrivals and departures from Beijing, on average there are at least 15 arrivals and 13 departures per day,” he said.
China has introduced strict limits on flights into the country amid some of the strictest COVID-19 control in the world.
