Olly Murs has responded to criticism over the ‘cruel’ lyrics to his new song ‘I Hate You When You’re Drunk’.
Last month, the singer released his new single from his album Marry me.
However, the lyrics were quickly dissected online, with critics suggesting the song showed Murs trying to humiliate a loved one because he was drunk and that the words were “misogynistic”.
While Mur’s fiancee Amelia Tank defended the former X factor As a finalist, he has now answered his critics when he appeared on the BBC Breakfast on Tuesday (6 December).
“I mean, it’s obviously annoying to think people took it that way because it wasn’t that intention,” Murs told hosts Jon Kay and Sally Nugent. “It was a song that I really identified with in the studio when it was a song that it was [written] eight years ago.”
He explained: “It’s so true because in early January I made a New Year’s resolution that I wouldn’t drink for a year. And so I was out there and my friends, my family, different people, “Oh my god, I hate you when you’re drunk.”
“So when we wrote the song, it was never about Amelia or anyone. It was just a song that we felt very connected to at the time.”
Murs reiterated that he was “really upset” at the way the lyrics were misunderstood, continuing, “I can’t believe people took it that way, which is a shame as I really love the song.” think great.
“I think when you see something written it can look a lot worse. If you listen to the song and understand what kind of artist I am. It was just more in a cheeky, fun way.
“If there was anyone I thought would be offended it would probably be Amelia when she thought it was about her, but it actually wasn’t. But hey, we’re moving on,” he concluded.
In “I Hate You When You’re Drunk,” Murs opens the song with the words: “Oh, you’re slurrin’ all your words, there’s make-up on my shirt / You’re dancin’ on the tables, can understand Don’t you / That you look like a mess and sing to Whitney?
The lyrics were criticized by Self Esteem, who shared a screenshot of it with the words, “Presented without comment.”
DJ Shaun Keaveny wrote: “According to the lyrics to his new song ‘I Hate You When You’re Drunk’, Olly Murs is a pretty sad controlling boyfriend. I look forward to her response song ‘I Hate You When You Sing’.”
