Olaf’s rework destroyed League of Legends as Moloch dominated meta

Olaf’s rework has set the Freljordian juggernaut on a path back into the League of Legends meta, and he seems unstoppable. The once-mediocre jungler is now a dual-role power pick, dominating his old role while finding new (and more lucrative) success in the top lane.

When Riot launched Olaf’s “mid-scope update” for League of Legends Patch 12.9, their goal was to bring the Berserker back home to Summoner’s Rift.

Despite vacillating in and out of the meta for years, it lacked a dedicated player base and was essentially a fairly one-dimensional jungler. So Riot wanted to “make his gear a lot more exciting” by making him a more powerful choice that could stand up to both the youngling and top lane.

It seems the rework has done its job — perhaps too well — as Olaf is now unstoppable with LoL patch 12.9.

Olaf is now the best top laner in League of Legends post patch 12.9 with a win rate increase of more than 10%.

Olaf now boasts one thing 53.28% top lane win rate across all ranks according to LoLalytics, as well as a 50.45% win rate in the jungle. This is an improvement in both roles compared to LoL patch 12.8 where both roles suffered with a win rate of 42.91% and 45.06%.

In case you’re keeping track – that’s over 10% added to Olaf Top’s winrate in just a single patch, which scales into Diamond Elo and up where he has a 15% presence. He now has the highest win rate in the role across all ranks.

The big momentum in the top lane comes from where Riot focused its mid-scope update. Adding more dueling power with a shield on his W, as well as indefinitely activating his ultimate while he hits an enemy, has made him a level 6 solo killing monster.

Widespread buffs across his gear like armor scraps on his undertow and base stat buffs in general have also made him stronger on the Rift.

Olaf’s buffs now make him a viable choice in two roles.

With pros yet to get their hands on it — MSI 2022 is currently playing on LoL patch 12.8 — it’s unclear if the overhaul will translate into proplay presence like the recent Ahri mid-scope update or big Wukong will knock down buffs.

However, it’s likely that even after LoL Patch 12.10’s durability update, Olaf will continue to be a force to be reckoned with, and a top laner player should keep an eye on it.
