Ohio State overtakes Duke No. 1 in the final minutes, winning 71-66

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State’s resilience is too much for the highest ranked Duke.

Zed Key scored a career-high 20 and Ohio State failed to score 1 Duke in the final four and a half minutes, completing the rally from a 15-point shortfall in the second half to beat the Blues with a scoreline. 71-66 on Tuesday night. .

EJ Liddell made two free throws with 1:06 remaining to give the Buckeyes (5-2) the lead from the start of the first half, and his jump made it 69-66 at half time. 16 seconds. Duke’s freshman star Paolo Banchero missed a 3-pointer hit, and Cedric Russell managed to recover and finish it at the free-throw line. Ohio State fans stormed the field as time ran out.

“I think our ability to stay with it is really important,” said Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann. “Players win games, and we’ve got some people making games for long periods of time.”

The Blue Devils (7-1) took the top spot in this week’s AP Top 25 poll – a break that could be short – after beating-No. 1 Gonzaga in Las Vegas. Ohio State improved to 2-1 against this year’s ranked opponents with a fourth straight game decided in the final minutes.

Liddell finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for Ohio State, which beat the country’s No. 1 team for the second time in a row at home. The Buckeyes beat Michigan State 80-64 on January 7, 2018.

“We’ve had some really dramatic games here, and I don’t think that’s going to be over anytime soon,” Holtmann said. “So if you think the tough games are over, we have a really, really different test Sunday night (at Penn State). That is the challenge before us right now. ”

Wendell Moore Jr led the Blues with 17 points and Banchero finished with 14.

Duke took a 13-point lead after halftime and extended that advantage to 49-34 early in the second half. Moore’s score is 5:19, the score is 65-57, and Trevor Keels takes a throw-in, leaving 4:29.

The Blues failed to score again, missing their last six shots as Ohio State closed the game 12-0. Duke endured a 1-1 draw earlier in the inning, allowing the Buckeyes to get closer.

“When we didn’t hit the breakpoint, we weren’t able to extend the lead a couple of times,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “They’re just right in there.”

Ohio State took an early 13-7 lead but Duke responded with a 13-2 run. Blue Devils shot 52.9% in the first half.

Despite several minutes lasting more than two minutes without a goal in the second half, the Buckeyes closed the game by taking the last four free throws and three shots, while Duke failed to score in the second half. 5:18 finally.

“We really dig into the defensive side of things,” says Russell. “It’s great to be playing at the top, especially at home.”

Going into tonight, Russell has only scored three points in his brief Buckeyes career since moving from Louisiana.

On Tuesday, he more than quadrupled his total. Russell shot 75% from the floor and a perfect 3 in 3 from outside the arc, including the 3 pointer that pulled Buckeyes in round two with 2:32 left.

“It was a whole bunch of emotions, but I didn’t give up on myself,” Russell said.

Ohio State has committed 12 sales while forcing a seven-season low. The Blue Devils took advantage of 15 points thanks to their extra possession.

Duke: Moore and Banchero, Duke’s top scorers, were solid, shooting an 11 for 29 combo, but they left it blank when it mattered most.

“I think we ended up exhausted,” Krzyzewski said.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes have 12 turns and 50 percent shots (11 of 22) at the free-throw line, areas they will have to clear up before the start of this weekend’s Big Ten game.

Duke: Hosts the State of South Carolina on December 14.

Ohio State: At Penn State on Sunday.
