An off-duty FBI agent fatally shot a man on a crowded train platform in Washington DC during the evening rush hour on Wednesday, police said.
The special agent and the man grappled and fell eight feet off the platform at Metro Center Station around 6:20 p.m. before the agent shot the man multiple times, killing him, DC police said during a news conference.
DC Deputy Police Chief Ashan Benedict said the man who was killed appeared to have started the altercation and that this agent, whom he described as a “veteran,” is believed to be the victim.
The man “attacked” the agent, and the pair got into a fight. One grabbed the other and both fell over a wall to a lower walkway away from the tracks, Benedict said.
The brawl continued on the lower level until the off-duty agent drew his gun and shot the other man, he said.
It is unclear whether the victim had a firearm. When the press conference took place about two hours later, no weapon was found.
The agent was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The sound of gunshots echoing through the busy train station sparked panic among commuters and halted service along the Red Line.
Witnesses said they saw dozens of people sprinting out of the station and straphangers falling to the ground when they heard gunfire, according to social media reports.
At least one train passed straight through the station without stopping, apparently after the conductor heard the shots.
“Really grateful for the quick response and thoughtful attention tonight from our rail operator whose response during today’s policing was to shoot at him @wmata Metro Center has protected customers from potential dangers,” tweeted Randy Clarke, Metro general manager and CEO.
DC Police are leading the investigation into the shooting with FBI assistance.
