ONE person is in custody, but police are still searching for a second suspect following a shooting at the Oakbrook Center in Oak Brook, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.
The Oak Brook The police department released a photo of the still-large suspect, who was photographed wearing a sky blue jacket.
Oak Brook Police Chief James Kruger said at a news conference that one of those hospitalized was a suspect.
Oak Brook Police said on Twitter that they have “two are detained. “
Police say one man is believed to be the shooter, and the other is a “companion” of one of the shooters.
They say the second shooting suspect is still big.
SWAT teams and tactical police officers went store-by-store looking for another suspected shooter but could not find him and believed the man was outside the Oakbrook Center shopping center.
The suspect admitted to the hospital is a man in his 30s who was shot three to four times and underwent successful surgery.
Three women were also shot, one each: two women in their 40s and one woman in her 20s.
Another woman was treated for a broken ankle while running from the shooting.
All injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
Gopal G. Lalmalani, Mayor of Oak Brook Village, expressed condolences to the injured and their families.
“It was really sad,” Lalmalani said. “My concerns and prayers go out to all those affected. The timing was bad and that was definitely not expected.”
The shooting happened around 5.44 p.m. on the east side of the mall near Ann Taylor and Nordstrom, when a group of men got into a commotion causing the two men to shoot.
“We had an officer within earshot who was there and was able to respond immediately,” said Chief Kruger.
“This is a very unfortunate and very embarrassing incident for our region.”
Police recovered two firearms used in the shooting.
Live footage shows several groups being escorted out of the Oakbrook Center within an hour of the incident, but groups of people can still be seen through windows at other stores.
A witness also told ABC7 that the shooting was the result of an argument that broke out in the mall, although it is unclear how many parties were involved in the confrontation.
“It’s four against one,” the witness, who asked to remain anonymous, told ABC7.
The witness said a man drew a gun on four other men involved in the confrontation, but it was not clear if any of the witnesses were injured.
Earlier in the evening, a Chicago area police scanner monitoring account reported an active shooting at the Oak Brook shopping center in Illinois.
“Police everywhere. Swat unit,” said one person Twitter The user posted a photo of the crowd at the mall.
Local ABC The branch reported that ambulances, fire trucks and police vehicles responding to the incident blocked all exits.
Again Twitter user said “My daughter is locked inside Nordstrom. She said the shooter was caught.”
Witnesses told ABC7 that shoppers “gathered” in changing rooms and storage rooms, in groups totaling up to 50 people.
Reports of the incident were posted on Twitter.
“The event at Oakbrook mall happened right in front of me and my girlfriend,” one person said Twitter user.
“To me, it looks like fireworks/crackers bc I see a lot of sparks.”
“Just witnessed hella police and a helicopter landing at the Oak Brook center at Nordstroms,” said again.
Helicopter news footage from local branches showed shoppers leaving the mall and reuniting with those waiting for them outside the building.
The shooting happened as accounts that tracked police scanners in the Chicago area reported number of shootings in the city, including several teenagers allegedly shot Thursday.
