NYPD cop identifies as man who died in bizarre boat accident that left ship stuck in deck of LI home: sources

An NYPD police officer was identified Friday as the man who died in a bizarre boating accident that saw the boat fly out of Long Island’s Great South Bay and crash into a house on West Fire Island.
Authorities identified the dead man as Phillip Sanzano, 47, of Bellport, LI — and law enforcement sources told the Post the victim was an officer working in the 83rd Precinct in Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Sanzano was an 18-year veteran of the Department and once served in the US military, sources said.
It’s still not clear what led to Thursday’s accident, in which the 30-foot Wellcraft center console boat became stuck in the deck of a home at about 7:35 a.m., Suffolk County Police said on Friday.
The boat’s other occupant, Christopher Cannella, 47, called 911 and reported that he and Sanzano were on board when the boat ran aground, flew into the home and overturned.
It was not immediately known who was piloting the boat at the time.
Sanzano was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities took Cannella, a native of West Babylonia, to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries, police officers said.
“I feel for the families,” said John Scherger, a neighbor who lives near the house.
“I pray it wasn’t a foul play. I pray it was just an accident. I don’t know. I only pray for positive things.”

Authorities said two men left to go fishing before dawn on Thursday morning. It is not clear from which anchorage they cast off.
Islip Fire Brigade said the boat appeared to be moving very rapidly just before the crash.
Police said the boat would have had to blow up to land where it landed.
No one was in the damaged home at the time of the accident.
Investigators from the Suffolk County Police Department’s Third Squad are investigating.
