NYC smoke store clerk shot dead while confronting robbers

A clerk at a Manhattan tobacconist was shot dead while confronting three robbers outside his store late Sunday, authorities said.

The 35-year-old worker was at the Orchard Smoke Shop on Orchard Street off East Houston Street on the Lower East Side just after 10:30 p.m. when the trio bought about $12,000 in merchandise and about $300 stolen in cash, police said.

As the bandits left, the worker went outside and confronted them, police officers said.

During the clash, one of the suspects shot the worker in the upper body and arm, police officers said.

They then fled in a black limousine, authorities said. No arrests were made.

The worker was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was recorded in stable condition.
