NYC opens new mega shelter for migrants

City Hall is quietly opening a new mega-accommodation in Midtown that can house about 600 migrants from the southern border — even as bus flow has slowed to a trickle, city officials said Tuesday.

The new facility at the Stewart Hotel on Seventh Avenue will be operated by Health and Hospitals Corporation and the city’s Office of Emergency Management.

It will replace the 300-room migrant shelter and reception center already in the building and operated by the Department of Homeless Services. It is scheduled to open sometime between December 5th and 11th, according to an internal email received in the mail

Many of the migrants are refugees fleeing Venezuela.

Current residents have the choice of staying at the hotel or moving to new accommodation operated by DHS.

This new facility will be the fourth mega accommodation to open in a hotel to accommodate the newcomers from the southern border, many of whom are seeking refugee status after fleeing the violence and chaos in Venezuela.

The other three emergency locations – known as HERRCs – are located at The Row NYC Hotel, The Watson Hotel and The Wolcott Hotel.

Details of the expected cost of the operation were not immediately available. NYC opens new mega shelter for migrants
