One person was killed and at least seven others injured – including a 15-year-old boy – in a series of shootings in the Big Apple overnight through Saturday, police said.
In the fatal incident, a man was gunned down shortly after 10 p.m. Friday during a fight at a bodega on Crescent Street near Stanley Avenue in the East New York borough of Brooklyn.
The victim, whose name was not immediately released, was shot in the face and chest and pronounced dead at Brookdale Hospital, police officers said.
Police at the scene arrested a 27-year-old man who was shot in the chest and groin after allegedly finding a firearm on him. According to the NYPD, he was listed in stable condition at Brookdale and charges were pending.
It was initially not clear what had fueled the dispute between the two customers, said a department spokesman.
The chaos also included an off-duty NYPD sergeant who was shot and robbed for his motorcycle in the Bronx and two innocent bystanders who were hit by stray bullets in the backseat of a Manhattan cab, police sources said.
Cops said the teenager was shot in the right arm around 1:30 a.m. Saturday along Hughes Avenue and East 180th Street in the East Tremont neighborhood of the Bronx. The youth, who was uncooperative, was taken to Jacobi Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Less than two hours later, a 48-year-old man was shot in the face outside a Richmond Terrace tavern on Staten Island. The victim was found when officers held a towel to his bloodied face around 3:15 a.m., police said. He was taken to Richmond County Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries and was uncooperative, the NYPD said.
Shortly after, around 3:40 a.m., a 39-year-old woman entered Kings County Hospital with a gunshot wound to her left leg, police officers said. The victim, who was also uncooperative, was listed in stable condition, police said.
Just 10 minutes later, two medical students in Manhattan were injured when gunshots erupted while they were in the back of a cab pulled up to a red light on West 37th Street between Eight and Ninth Avenues, police and sources said.
The men, aged 22 and 24, were each shot in one of their arms and taken to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to sources and authorities.
“We don’t believe they were the intended targets,” an NYPD spokeswoman told the Post.
Investigators believe three gunmen targeted a couple wearing lots of jewelry, who they spotted at a nearby Dollar Pizza, police sources said. According to the sources, the intended targets were not hit.
Police recovered three grenades at the scene. The two victims had gotten into the cab on West 37th Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues and were heading west when they were shot, the sources said. An NYPD spokesman could not immediately confirm that the two men were medical students.
Shortly after 4:30 a.m., the NYPD off-duty assistant sergeant, 23, was shot in the left leg when three men were walking him on Independence Avenue, just off West 239th Street in Riverdale, The Bronx, carrying his motorcycle, his bag and his robbed cell phones, police said.
The wounded auxiliary officer was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. There were no arrests as of Saturday afternoon.
