NYC man could lose leg after stepping out of car after crash

A young man who got out of his car after breaking a fender overnight on the Cross Island Parkway was hit by a hit-and-run driver and could now lose his leg, authorities said on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old man was driving a yellow Ford Escape north on the parkway — approaching exit 30 of the Long Island Expressway — in Queens when his car and another vehicle collided around 11:40 p.m. Monday, police officers said.
The young man got out of his car as an off-duty paramedic drove by in a Volkswagen to help, police officers said.
Suddenly, a fourth motorist in a white BMW sped past – and hit the Volkswagen, which tumbled forward, trapping the Ford driver between himself and his own vehicle, authorities said.
The BMW driver got out of the car and ran away on foot, police said.

The 20-year-old driver was taken to hospital in critical but stable condition and appeared to lose one of his legs, police officers said.
The hit-and-run driver was still on the run Tuesday morning.
