North Carolina man charged with child pornography over 17 years old after running away with 14-year-old sex trafficking

Marcus Antwan Gambrell, 30, of Raleigh, was today sentenced to 210 months in prison for producing child pornography.

Gambrell and co-defendant Kevin Rudolph were charged on a four-count alternate indictment on April 7, 2020. The indictment charges both men with child sex trafficking and internet use. to promote prostitution, Gambrell for producing child pornography and Rudolph for possessing a firearm for a felony. Gambrell committed the production crime on January 19, 2021.

According to court records and court testimony, on December 28, 2018, a Raleigh Police Department detective was conducting an online investigation when he came across an advertisement offering commercial prostitution for minors.

Law enforcement identified the minor as a 14-year-old girl who had fled the makeshift home six days earlier. The detective texted the phone number listed on the ad to book a date for prostitution. He was led to a room at a motel 6 in Raleigh, where he booked and rescued victims.

In the room, the officers placed condoms, iPads and a bag of books and a gun. Law enforcement discovered that the hotel was registered with Marcus Gambrell. The iPad review found that photos of the victim were used in advertisements for prostitution, as well as additional photos showing the genitals of the underage victim. In some photos, Gambrell’s hand is visible and identifiable based on the tattoos.

The victim explained to officers that after running away – wearing slippers and no coat, even though it was the end of December – she finally arrived at the Raleigh Inn in Raleigh. There, on Christmas Day, she met and interacted with Gambrell and Rudolph.

The two men invited her to move with them to a nearby motel the next day. Upon arriving at Motel 6, Gambrell took nude photos of the victim with an iPad.

These two men used those photos to post and maintain online advertising for prostitution for victims. Over the next two days, they took turns monitoring the prostitution ring and updating each other via Facebook Messenger.

The victim estimated that Rudolph and Gambrell arranged about 10 to 15 “dates” a day and that they kept all the money. She said that on one occasion Gambrell had vaginal sex with her, when Rudolph recorded a video with his cell phone. However, law enforcement was unable to recover the video.

Co-defendant Kevin Rudolph pleaded not guilty on September 14, 2021 to three counts: sex trafficking of a minor, possession of a gun by a convict and using the internet to advertise prostitution. The Hs trial is currently scheduled to begin on May 16, 2022.

The charges against Rudolph are just accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Michael F. Easley, Jr., United States Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, made the announcement following the sentencing of U.S. District Judge Louise W. Flanagan. The Raleigh Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) launched the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Jake D. Pugh prosecuted the case.
