Norman City Council member fired for comments some called racist

NORMAN, Okla. (KFOR) – A Norman City Council member is being criticized for comments he made during a recent council meeting that some are calling racist.

“We found that in the case of Norman PD, blacks were still 3.4 times more raped than whites,” said a representative from the Center for Fair Policy.

It all started with a Center for Policy Equity presentation of a Norman Police Department study during Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“Our Police Department isn’t afraid to put the data out there to work with our community partners,” Chief Norman, Kevin Foster, said during the presentation.

Later, Ward 3 council member Kelly Lynn called the study “junk”.

“Looking at the FBI statistics, African-Americans are more responsible for murder, robbery, all kinds of violent crimes, disproportionate to their population percentage. Lynn said. “This seems like a huge waste of time to me.”

Ward 1 council member Brandi Studley later responded.

“I was a bit shocked by the comments made by the Lynn board members. I find them extremely disturbing and racist and I don’t appreciate that, and I apologize to our black community members for having to hear that,” she said.

Mayor Breea Clark also responded to the comments on Twitter, saying, “CM’s comments are truly inappropriate and offensive, but I have no right to criticize the Councilmembers and despite being vile, what is said is protected speech under the first amendment. With that said, I have no problem publicly denouncing this behavior. ”

“My youngest daughter is half black, and to me it was like the comments he made that basically said that because my daughter is black, she is more likely to be a criminal. than my white kids, and that’s how I take it and that’s how I feel. ,” Studley told KFOR on Thursday.

Lynn refused to speak to News 4 on camera but sent us these FBI statistics from 2019. FBI – Table 43.

He told News 4 in a statement, “Per capita, African Americans commit more crimes in more regions than any other ethnic group. For example, 13% of the population is responsible for more than 50% of murders. The study presented to us did not include higher crime rates by race, when looking at rates of use of force. “

“Trying to quote statistics from the FBI is ridiculous. There are many factors that explain why black people are arrested. We know that they have been wrongly accused so many times, especially in the past history of our country and our present history,” Studley said.
