NASA officials shared three images on their Mars Perseverance Twitter account this week: Two on the surface of a rock and one of the Perseverance wheel.

The rock, named “Issole”, appears to have two wide eyes and an open “O” mouth that looks like a surprised look.

Issole got a surprised look on her face thanks to NASA’s Perserverance land probe, which drilled holes in its surface to collect samples.

The Twitter post said: “This rock was almost surprised when I turned around.

“Thankfully, I was able to collect another sample here to replace the one I removed earlier,” the tweet continued.

NASA officials added that this sample could be one of the oldest that Perseverance has collected and could help us better understand the history of Mars.

Issole is considered an ancient rock on Mars and is therefore of particular interest to NASA.

The agency had hoped to collect enough samples from Issole so they could study them on Earth in the future.

However, the Mars rover ran into a bit of a problem in December when a pebble clogged its sample collection system.

Thankfully, NASA was able to resolve the issue, and the rover was able to collect new samples this week.

After NASA shared the success of Perseverance on Twitter, dozens of users responded to the thread by redrawing their own drill holes.

One user compared the image to Pokemon’s beloved Pikachu.

Another user compared the drill marks to the face of a baby macaque.
