No. 10 prepares to resign

Downing Street has prepared a response pending the resignation of top civil servant Simon Case over Sue Gray’s report to Partygate.

The planning document seen by The Independent, comes despite the findings from Ms Gray’s report on lockdown busting parties in Whitehall and Westminster, which have not yet been released. The results are also said not to have been shared with No. 10 at this point.

The drafted letter mentions Mr Case’s contributions during the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. It is also noted that he took over the role from Sir Mark Sedwill in September 2020 when the country was in the midst of Covid, its biggest challenge since the Second World War.

Preparations at No10 have come to light after news reports over the weekend suggested Mr Case, Britain’s most senior civil servant, would become the scapegoat for No10 following the Partygate inquiry.

An exclusive survey for The Independent Two-thirds of voters believe Mr Johnson should resign if he is heavily criticized by Ms Gray’s report.

Downing Street did not respond to a request for comment ahead of publication.

Ms Gray’s full report could be released as early as Wednesday.

New claims of messy lockdown parties and late-night drinking at No. 10 have put further pressure on the Prime Minister as the report’s publication threatens.
