Nintendo president says company focuses on Switch software services, not successors

Nintendo is continuing to drive discussions regarding future plans for the Switch and whatever the successor to the popular hybrid console will be. But in a new interview with the Japanese publication NikkeiNintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa spoke about the company’s approach to developing its hardware.

As for Nintendo, the company doesn’t follow a strict timeline when it comes to releasing or even developing its gaming hardware. Instead, Furukawa said it is “continuously researching technology” in an effort to improve existing services, explore new opportunities and create differentiated experiences.

“The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicating closely and thinking about how we can propose new forms of entertainment,” Furukawa said. Nikkei. “To create a single piece of hardware, we have to prepare a lot in advance several years, so we are working non-stop. Ultimately, the deciding factor on whether to commercialize a product is whether it can create a new experience.”

This process is clearly reflected in Nintendo’s financial statements. The company previously doubled about its in-house game development capabilities and continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars about research and development.
