Nintendo is continuing to drive discussions regarding future plans for the Switch and whatever the successor to the popular hybrid console will be. But in a new interview with the Japanese publication NikkeiNintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa spoke about the company’s approach to developing its hardware.
As for Nintendo, the company doesn’t follow a strict timeline when it comes to releasing or even developing its gaming hardware. Instead, Furukawa said it is “continuously researching technology” in an effort to improve existing services, explore new opportunities and create differentiated experiences.
“The hardware and software development teams are in the same building, communicating closely and thinking about how we can propose new forms of entertainment,” Furukawa said. Nikkei. “To create a single piece of hardware, we have to prepare a lot in advance several years, so we are working non-stop. Ultimately, the deciding factor on whether to commercialize a product is whether it can create a new experience.”
This process is clearly reflected in Nintendo’s financial statements. The company previously doubled about its in-house game development capabilities and continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars about research and development.
In addition, Nintendo’s continued use of the phrase “between its life cycleWhen it comes to Switch, it’s something Furukawa and management intentionally use because they feel its software offerings could help extend its life even further.
“We always say that we are in the middle of the Switch lifecycle, and since one piece of hardware can be used to play both stationary and mobile games, we can offer a wide range of software for this purpose. ,” Furukawa told Nikkei. “The life cycle can still be extended.”
With that in mind, Furukawa and Nintendo are focusing their fans with new and exciting games while continuing to lower the barrier to playing those games.
Nintendo is also tracking trends across the entire entertainment industry. Furukawa notes that the company has experienced “downfall” several times in the past, and sees the year as a key time to continue to improve.
“If we don’t come up with fresh and surprising offers to new customers, we will always be forgotten,” Furukawa told Nikkei.
