Charles meets a young cancer patient in London
During his visit to the Grafton Way Building at University College Hospital in central London, Charles met Karen Dawson, 43, and her 12-year-old daughter Louise, who is on day 9 of a 30-day PBT course for a spinal tumour.
The Prince and Dr. Yen-Ching Chang, Clinical Director for PBT, joined the couple from Wickford, Essex as they relaxed in a room where the schoolgirl was drawing pictures of rabbits ahead of their next session.
Impressed by her efforts, Charles asked, “You’re just doing this hands-free? It’s very good – fantastic. Do you draw a lot?”
Louise was a little speechless and when the prince asked about the tutoring, her mother said a tutor taught the core subjects math, English and science, to which Charles quipped to the young patient, “You’re going to be an expert on proton beams. “
Charles seemed intrigued when Dr. Chang, who oversees the schoolgirl’s PBT care, showed her the suite where treatment takes place.
PBT is a type of radiation therapy that uses proton beams to target cancerous tumors, and the consulting oncologist told the prince “essentially it damages the DNA so the (cancer) cell can’t divide in the future.”
Before leaving, Charles met employees who had lined the path to his car and was presented with a multicolored face mask.
