New York apartment fire: Teenagers escape deadly blaze on 4th floor of building by climbing out window, under electric pole

NEW YORK – Two teenagers escaped a deadly fire on the fourth floor of a New York City apartment by climbing out of a window and sliding down an outside power pole.

Video shows the 18-year-old woman and 13-year-old boy ducking down a power pole and widening the building as terrified neighbors watched and flames shot up from windows overhead.

The fire broke out Thursday morning inside a public housing project in the East Village residential area of the city.

A 32-year-old man was killed and a 46-year-old woman was seriously injured. The two teenagers who escaped were treated for burns and smoke inhalation but survived, and four others suffered minor injuries.

Several e-bikes were found inside the apartment where the fire broke out and firefighters are looking into the possibility that they ignited. Residents said they heard a loud bang before the building caught fire.

Neighbor Tashaka Owens said she believes the teenagers wouldn’t have escaped the building alive if it weren’t for the poles outside.

“They were going to jump out of the window, but people kept saying to them, ‘Come on! Come on!’ So when they clung, they climbed the pole, and they started to slide down… and those kids, they slid down,” she said.
