Hand-drawn two-dimensional monochrome image covers a new Lakeview restaurant that is making its mark on social media.
Restaurant 2d, located at 3155 N. Halsted St., opened quietly on Thursday, serving Chicagoans with Pon de ring donuts, fried chicken and coffee.
Hundreds of thousands of people have watched videos of the Paris-inspired restaurant on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, with some noting it feels like stepping inside a painting.
“I just happened to see ‘Emily in Paris,'” says cafe designer Vanessa Thanh Vu. “It was the show that inspired this first theme.”
She designed every piece of architecture inside the restaurant, including the tub that customers can step inside to take pictures and play with plastic balls that simulate bubbles.
Kevin Yu, co-owner of 2d Restaurant says each cup of coffee is “made by hand, on request.” His iconic donuts, also known as mochi donuts in some parts of the world, are lighter and softer than the usual.
“Our donut box, which looks like a comic book, was designed by my lovely wife Vanessa,” Yu said. “We’re grateful to be in the city of Chicago in the Lakeview neighborhood, and we can’t wait to share the joy of 2d Restaurants with the city of Chicago.”
The new place is open from 10am to 7pm for pedestrians only at this time. Click here for more information.
