After the Nets were beaten by COVID-19 earlier this season, head coach Steve Nash was late to the game on Monday night due to health and safety protocols.
Assistant coach Jacque Vaughn has led Brooklyn to visit Toronto at the Barclays Center, and will take over as head coach until Nash finally returns.
The entire Nets coaching staff is vaccinated, and in accordance with NBA health and safety procedures, vaccinated individuals are not included in contact tracing.
Ironically, Nash was asked before Monday’s game about the unpredictable nature of the Nets’ season with players coming in and out.
“I’ve said it before but our team is so used to adversity and you know unhappiness when it’s available. So I don’t think we persist too much day in and day out,” Nash said. “I think everyone just needs to stay focused and work on improving. We asked them to come together during this difficult time, and they did. We asked them to try to improve day by day; they did it.
“We don’t always get results, but we feel like we’re building something and looking for growth and improvement. It doesn’t have to be about winning all the time, but I think we’ve won some games lately, we’ve improved and the group has been tighter. So I don’t think they’re affected on a daily basis as to who’s available and when they’ll be back. “
Brooklyn has been hit hard by COVID ahead of the holiday season, with a total of 13 players participating in the protocol and 10 missing at the same time.
The Nets had five different games that were either tweaked or completely moved. They have gone a week without playing from December 18 until Christmas, with three consecutive games cancelled.
Vaughn served as interim coach after the Nets parted ways with predecessor Kenny Atkinson two seasons ago, leading the Nets in the Orlando bubble and reaching the knockout stages. When Nash was hired, 47-year-old Vaughn was retained as defensive coordinator and primary assistant.
