Netflix comedy songs and score explored

Unstable is the newest addition to Netflix and the series is packed with a lot of music, but what songs are included in its toe-tapping soundtrack?

Music can play an important role in movies and TV shows, as using songs or an original score can help get just the right feel to a scene.

That’s incredibly important for a quirky comedy like Rob Lowe with Unstable, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Netflix series’ soundtrack features a number of well-known songs throughout its eight episodes.

Unstable release date and plot preview

Unstable landed on Netflix on Thursday March 30, 2023.

Starring real-life father-son duo Rob and John Owen Lowe, the series tells the story of Ellis Dragon as he reconnects with his son Jackson after the deaths of their respective wife and mother.

Ellis is a much-admired if eccentric and borderline narcissistic biotech entrepreneur who works to make the world a better place, but has become increasingly unhinged in recent months, threatening his own well-being and that of his company.

His son Jackson, who is neither of those things, is brought in by Ellis’ trusty assistant Anna, who is hoping that if the couple can mend their estranged relationship, it could help them both move on and keep the venture from fading into oblivion.

Who composed the score?

In addition to using licensed songs, Unstable also includes an original score, which is the work of composer duo Mark Foster and Sven Faulconer.

Mark Foster will be familiar to many as he is the lead singer of the band Foster the People, whose most popular song, Pumped Up Kicks, has had a staggering 1.4 billion plays on Spotify.

While Foster has worked on film scores in the past, notably 2015’s ‘Little Boy’ and 2022’s ‘Let Me Go (The Right Way)’, this is the first time he has scored for a television series.

His collaborator Sven Faulconer is a Belgian musician and composer who has worked in the music department of a number of major productions including Scream VI, Top Gun: Maverick, Disney’s Strange World, Netflix Red Notice and the Marvel productions Black Widow and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier .

Coinciding with the release of Unstable, the vibrant Latino, African and Haitian-inspired score for the series was released as an album, which fans can find on Spotify and Apple Music.

Unstable is available to stream now on Netflix following its release on Thursday 30th March 2023.
