Lily Allen has posted about “Nepo babies” on social media.
In recent weeks, TikTok users have shared their fascination with celebrities from the entertainment industry who they didn’t know had famous or successful parents, dubbing them “nepo babies” (short for nepotism).
Actress Zoë Kravitz (daughter of musician Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonet) and model and musician Lourdes Leon (Madonna’s eldest daughter) are among those who have subsequently defended themselves against the debate.
Now singer and actor Allen – daughter of actor Keith Allen – has spoken out.
“The Nepo babies you should be worried about are the ones who work for law firms, banks and politics,” she tweeted Monday (December 19).
“When we talk about the real world consequences and deprive people of opportunities. BUT that’s none of my business.”
She added: “In childhood we crave stability and love, nurturing, we don’t yet care about money or proximity to power. Many of the Nepo babies lack these basic things during childhood as their parents are likely to be narcissistic.”
In another tweet, she wrote, “And before you attack me for being a Nepo baby myself, I’ll be the first to tell you I earn literally nothing.”
Allen and her father have had a strained relationship over the years, with the musician opening up about her estrangement from him in 2021.
Last month, The Independent‘s Louis Chilton wrote about why he thinks Hollywood’s Nepo babies should just go public with their privileges.
Earlier this year, Allen fans were furious at the “disrespect” the singer allegedly received from a number of TikTokers, who have dubbed her “David Harbour’s wife.” Allen married her stranger things star in 2020.
