Meanwhile, one said: “How can you justify no payments coming or going 4 days before Christmas! No excuses! You’ll lose me as a single customer! when Christmas is over!! Nationwide is a joke!”

On Twitter, the construction society responded to worried and outraged customers.

A representative said: “The team is working hard to resolve this issue as soon as possible. We currently do not have a timeframe for when this issue will be resolved.”
