My son’s wife hears me, but I’m not sorry

Dear Amy: In 2019, after a long process of 5 years of determination, my son married a young girl who was the only child of an Indian couple whose own marriage was arranged.

Our daughter-in-law did not include our family and did not seem to want any contact with us.

This past Christmas, she mostly kept to herself, doing everything on the computer, playing with her dog, or just staying in the guest bedroom while my son hung out with us.

We are a very warm family. Our son and daughter joined in, while my daughter-in-law didn’t help with the kitchen at all, avoiding hugs and walking into her bedroom after dinner without saying a word.

She is not socially considerate and her behavior, especially towards me, has always been extremely cold and aloof.

I try not to take it too personally because she is like most people in our generation, including in her family.

She did not have a good relationship with her biological mother, and they clashed a lot when it came to the wedding.
