My girlfriend bought me an Xbox Series S instead of a PS5

Xbox Series S – would you be sad if you had one for Christmas? (photo: Microsoft)

One reader was shocked to learn he didn’t get a PS5 for Christmas but accepted Xbox The S series as a worthy replacement.

I read Reader’s Features weeks, about buying a PlayStation 5 and immediately regretting it, not much sympathy. I’ve been trying to buy one for a year now, and even though I really couldn’t afford it at first (so I don’t really try that much most of the time), I made a deal with his girlfriend. herself to buy one for Christmas, should she make some money, and so is looking forward to finally sitting down to play on Sony’s newest console this month.

But then she hit me with a bomb. Not wanting to cause any discomfort at Christmas itself, she told me that because we still couldn’t get a PlayStation 5, she voluntarily used part of the money to buy an Xbox Series S. Her logic is at least that way, we’ll have a new next-gen console for Christmas, and as the GAME staff seem to have hinted at the idea, Xbox already has one anyway. better year than Sony.

You can imagine how happy I was to hear this. But since I’m a nice guy and I love my girlfriend, I gritted my teeth and pretended to go with the plan. Honestly, I don’t know what to do as just going back and selling it seems not only rude but also pointless since, to be fair, there’s very little chance of getting a PlayStation 5 anyway at the time. this year.

Sensing my anxiety, she suggested we make an early Christmas present and I’ve been using it all week. Since Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite are really two of the biggest releases of the season (I still can’t figure out if the GAME guy is really trying to help or just trying to sell), I admit I admit I got that new thrill toy when I downloaded them and played them for the first time and… really liked them.

What became immediately clear to me is that this is not the kind of exclusive I would be playing on a PlayStation 5, with no exclusive arcade racer (Gran Turismo is not an arcade racer at all) or shooters. first person gun. I haven’t played much of Halo’s campaigns, but while I’m not impressed, the online action has been great so far.

The thing is, and this is something that I don’t think my girlfriend really appreciated at the time, which is that even though she’s not a gamer, she still enjoys watching me play games. Story-based gameplay. We’ve had a great time (relatively speaking) with the likes of The Last Of Us, God Of War and even Bloodborne, because she’s engaged in the story and strategy, bringing make suggestions and keep an eye on things while I’m playing.

She can’t really do that with any Xbox exclusives. Forza just wasn’t that kind of game and she was bored with Halo, because there wasn’t much of a story and you just yelled ‘take that away’.

To me, these aren’t bugs in the game, but they do spoil the way our gaming sessions usually work, meaning I’ll have to pick up a third-party game for Christmas. It could be Far Cry 6 or the remake of Mass Effect, which we were meant to be in.

Or, actually, maybe Psychonauts 2. Neither of us liked the look and feel of the characters but given the good reviews, and the fact that it’s an Xbox exclusive, which is also a single-player story game, seems worth a try.

As it turned out, however, what I realized was that in an ideal world, everyone would have access to every game. The Xbox Series S console is great value for money and so is the Game Pass, but while I miss the PlayStation 5 games I look forward to playing, I also appreciate that what Xbox is offering is something that’s different. That was not the case the previous generation.

So while I like the PlayStation 5, I’m actually fine with its competition. I’m also starting to realize that most console competition just spawns from people having to make a choice between the two and then justifying that decision on their own. Let’s say I can buy a PlayStation 5 next year, but that won’t be a problem for me at least.
