My 28 year old girlfriend’s mom forbade her to move in with me unless she comes too

Being around your parents isn’t usually a bad thing, except it can become a problem if it starts to affect your romantic relationships.

One Redditor is having this issue with their 28-year-old girlfriend, whose mom won’t let her move out of the house without her, they wrote.

Users said they have been dating their girlfriends for a while and both are ready to move in together.

However, the girlfriend suggested that her mother move in with them because she “didn’t want to be alone” and “didn’t have a partner”.

The Redditor wrote that their girlfriend’s mother had no material or financial need to still live with her daughter.

“She simply won’t let her daughter risk her own life in peace because she doesn’t want to be alone,” they added.

They say this makes them “feel like a teenager again” because they’re “dating someone whose parents are always in their ear.”

Additionally, they write that the mother always puts her problems on her daughter “so she feels the need to be her savior all the time.”

“It’s been a toxic relationship and she knows it and is tired of it herself…

“Is it worth staying to see if it changes, should I express my disappointment in the hope it will change things for the better or will this be a deal breaker?” they asked.

A lot of users responded with advice, like one who wrote: “You just show your GF you don’t care about living with her mom and in fact you consider it a deal breaker.”

They continued: “Do you have concerns about the underlying viability of this relationship due to her mother’s attachment and this is a perfectly valid concern.”

Another suggested: “The more your girlfriend allows her mother to behave, things will never change for her.

“She needs to work on her own and perhaps some therapy.”
