“Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski spilled hot tea Monday morning: “Empowered” Jada Pinkett-Smith doesn’t need a gossipy male savior.
Brzezinski has condemned Oscar winner Will Smith’s Sunday night extravaganza in which he infamously smacked the hilarious Chris Rock over a divisive Jada joke at the 2022 Academy Awards.
For those who have been living under a pop culture rock, the incident comes after the 57-year-old rock made a bald joke about Smith’s actress, the woman who has been candid about her ongoing battle with alopecia. In response, Smith, 53, who had just won the Best Actor Oscar for his work in ‘King Richard’, sauntered onto the stage and slapped the comic in the face – before taking a seat and warning Rock ‘my wife’s name.’ keep it a secret from your damn mouth.”
Brzezinski, 54, for example, didn’t take well to Smith’s fight for knighthood, insisting his soulmate was more than capable of defending herself. The Wrap reports.
“Jada Pinkett Smith is one of the strongest, most supportive women I’ve ever seen out there,” Brzezinski said on Monday’s episode. “She’s strong; she’s beautiful; she tells a lot of vulnerable stories during her ‘Red Table Talks’.”
The political commentator continued: “She goes where no one dares to go. She can take care of herself, thanks #1.”
In general, Brzezinski found it “disappointing” that Smith chose to respond to words with violence, saying, “Will Smith took a long time to think about what he was doing when he came on this stage and I just don’t know how it did.” added to that.”
“[It was] a terrible display. Especially with everything we are reporting in the world,” the journalist added, presumably referring to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Brezinski ended her soapbox session by scolding the “Ali” actor for his mea culpa after the punch, which she claimed skipped a crucial party.
“Did he apologize to Chris Rock in his apology?” she asked. “Did anyone notice? did i miss it Didn’t he record it? He didn’t apologize to the man he hit, he attacked him on stage?”
In fact, Will Smith’s smackdown at the Academy Awards has divided the public with many mainstream personalities who find it totally inappropriate to hit someone over a punch line.
“So upsetting – on every level – bravo to Chris Rock – for not gutting Will Smith – what he could do any day of the week – he walked away – bravo to a sad display of toxic masculinity by a narcissistic madman.” tweeted comedian Rosie O’Donnell, 60.
Today show host Craig Melvin recently came under fire after claiming that the star’s “Chris Rocking” “supported this long-held perception… that men of color can’t control their anger and anger.”
However, others praised the “Hancock” actor for doing what they saw as defending his wife’s honor.
In a since-deleted tweet, left-leaning MP Ayanna Pressley, who reportedly suffers from alopecia, wrote: “#Alopecia Nation stand up! Thank you #WillSmith Shout out to all the husbands who defend their wives living with alopecia in the face of daily ignorance and insults.”
