MMA fighter William Cassoday chokes man who attacks police officer

A former mixed martial artist jumped into action to take out a man who was fighting a police officer on the side of the road in Indiana, a report said.

William Cassoday, 39, was driving to his mother’s house Monday afternoon when he saw a Porter County Sheriff’s Office patrol officer attacked, according to The Lake Geneva Regional News.

“As I was walking by, I saw the guy hitting the cop,” Cassoday reportedly said.

The MMA fighter and Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt was driving down the street and running back to the scene when suspect Christopher Delgado, 37, was able to attack two other people, the article said.

Cassoday then wrapped his arm around Delgado’s neck from behind and used his other arm to tighten the grip in a “butt-naked choke,” according to the outlet.

“He couldn’t do anything because I was pressing on his neck and then for a second he felt like he was going to go limp and I relaxed[ed] it up,” Cassoday told WMAQ-TV.

“I’m 280 pounds – this guy was probably half my height,” he added.

The Valparaiso resident brought the cantankerous offender to the ground for Patrol Officer Jamison Smith to handcuff him.

Delgado was pulled over after Smith recognized him as a suspected theft car, the report said. The suspect initially pretended to be someone else before dishing out punches when arrested.

According to the report, he was charged with assault, misdemeanor offenses against law enforcement and false information.

For Cassoday, helping the cop was the same as always.

“Things like that don’t bother me,” the fighter is said to have said.

Officials later said they could “Mr. Thank you William Cassoday enough for his bravery.”

“He put his own safety aside and found himself in danger while helping Officer Smith apprehend a felon,” Cpl. Benjamin McFalls is said to have said.

“Mr. Cassoday willingly jumped into a fight in which our officer was violently assaulted,” he continued.

“Mr. Cassoday exemplified what it means to be a resident of Porter County. We will honor him in the near future.”
