MLB Lock is now affecting spring training games

LEE COUNTY

Major League Baseball and its players are at odds with each other over how much they earn. But this ongoing dispute doesn’t just affect fans.

This stall also hurts the vendors those fans trust to watch at the games.

Two years ago, the spring training games were canceled due to the outbreak of the pandemic. Then, in 2021, capacity is limited to practice games in the spring. This year, businesses and suppliers are bracing for another financial hit that will last three years in a row.

Suppliers who spoke to WINK News say they remain cautiously optimistic despite these financial impacts.

There are several sights, sounds, and smells associated with spring training.

And, if you’ve been to JetBlue Park, chances are you’ve enjoyed the scent from Nuts Galore!

Jan and Bernie Zayac are the owners of Nuts Galore! “We cook a variety of varieties, so we have those in stock to take away. I don’t cook ahead of time because we cook everything new. So we were just waiting to ‘go’, staying up all night cooking,” Zayacs said, laughing.

Major League Baseball is postponing spring practice until at least March 5. That means four of the 17 home spring practice games for the Boston Red Sox will no longer take place.

“This is a big deal. And I think it’s going to be a big deal for people with season tickets, you know. They’ve got their vacations planned out,” Zayac said.

The 17 home games at JetBlue Park are a pivotal time for the business. Missing even one game can hurt them financially.

The owner of Tropical Island Kettle Korn agrees. Carol Dembrowksi is the owner of Tropical Island Kettle Korn. “The Red Sox is definitely our biggest event of the year. And we really miss… we miss the games,” said Dembrowski.

Negotiations are expected to begin on Monday, so that is likely a March 5 start date.

Dembrowski just wants to get back to being surrounded by the team, fans and other salespeople she loves.

“We miss our Red Sox fans,” Dembrowski said. “We miss our customers. And we’re hoping, hopefully for at least a couple of weeks. That’s what we’re hoping for.
