Mitt Romney calls on NATO to prepare for Russian nuclear weapons

The US and its NATO allies should prepare a “devastating” response to a possible Russian nuclear action, Sen. Mitt Romney said Saturday.

The call for action follows threats from the Kremlin and warnings from Russian diplomats that invading the country could lead to a nuclear strike in Ukraine, the Utah Republican wrote in an op-ed for the New York Times.

“Russia’s use of a nuclear weapon would undeniably be a geopolitical event being redefined and refocused,” Romney, 75, wrote.

“We should imagine the unimaginable, specifically how we would respond militarily and economically to such a seismic shift in the global geopolitical terrain.”

The former presidential candidate provided Western allies with several options in addition to a nuclear response should a “cornered and delusional” Russian President Vladimir Putin use a nuclear weapon.

NATO forces could work with Russia in Ukraine and thwart their attempts to retake peaceful former Soviet territory, he wrote.

The US could also pressure China and other Russia allies to turn on their partner with an ultimatum similar to that issued by former President George W. Bush after the September 11 attacks.

“You are either with us or with Russia – you cannot be with both,” Romney wrote.

Any nation that joins a post-nuclear Russia would be a “global outcast” and forced to endure an “economic Armageddon” that is “far preferable to a nuclear Armageddon,” he said.

Romney said he supports continued US support for Ukraine and expects the Biden administration to work with NATO to “develop and evaluate a wide range of options.”

“The possible responses to an act as heinous and geopolitically confusing as a nuclear strike must be optimally designed and have the support of our NATO allies,” Romney concluded.

“Mr. Putin and his enablers should have no doubt that our response to such depravity would be devastating.”
