Missouri firefighters rescue people trapped on a carnival ride

The Missouri Fire Department responded to a broken carnival ride on Friday night, rescuing seven people trapped in cars at up to 40 feet, authorities said.

The rescue operation began around 10 p.m. in downtown Kirkwood after riders were stranded at the carnival attraction, Kirkwood Fire and Rescue said.

The carnival was part of a weekend event called St. Peterfest, a fundraiser for the local St. Peter Catholic Church, FOX2 St. Louis reported.

Three of the drivers were trapped in a car that stopped about 40 feet in the air, rescuers said.

A second car carrying four people got stuck at the end of the drive, several feet off the ground, KDSK-TV reported.

Firefighters got people down safely from the ride using ropes, engineering systems and a turntable ladder, rescue workers told FOX2 St. Louis. The operation lasted about 30 minutes and no injuries were reported.

Church officials told the station that a defective part of the ride is believed to have caused the malfunction.
