The odds of finding the false teeth were huge, especially considering the teeth were lost on a Monday. They were only found this Friday and had moved more than two miles to the west.
“They really scared me,” Aaron Welborn said. “I was like, where are the rest of this guy’s teeth?”
This year’s Gulf Shores vacation is sure to be one of the most memorable for Aaron and his wife Blaire. It will forever be intertwined with that of another family they never met.
To get the whole story we have to go back four days. Randy Williams from Wisconsin was in the water when the wind blew his hat off.
“And I was going to get my hat and I was laying sideways and a wave just came in and it hit me near the head and I felt it,” Randy Williams recalled during a phone interview from Wisconsin. “I felt them when I went in the water and I had them in my hand in the ocean for a second and then they were gone.”
Williams lost hope but made the most of his vacation and returned home on Friday, May 13, 2022. Around the same time, Welborn was finishing up a snorkeling adventure just offshore from his beach rental. He had removed his fins and snorkel and was making his way to shore.
“I’m just fine, I’ll put my glasses on and look in the water when I go upstairs and maybe I’ll randomly find something and I’ll stick my head in the water and as soon as I put my head in the water, they were literally sitting on the.” reason and just smiled at me,” Welborn said.
A closer look revealed a name imprinted on the dentures. Now came the challenge. Find the right Randy Williams and reunite him with his lost top. Welborn took to Facebook and posted pictures of the teeth, and it quickly garnered attention. Someone in the thread searched for Randy Williams in Gulf Shores and came up with a hit. Contact was established and the right Randy was found within 20 minutes.
“At first I thought it was someone pranking me and I said yes because I didn’t know and she said ‘My cousin found her’ and I said are you serious and she said, ‘Yeah,’ and she gave me his phone number,” Williams said.
The last few days have been quite an adventure for the Welborns and Randy’s teeth; so much so that the Denture Adventure road trip has taken on a life of its own. The final stop in Alabama… the Fox 10 News studios.
“We laughed a lot. We felt this story was a story that you could really sink your teeth into,” laughed Blaire Welborn.
It’s a story they will probably tell their grandchildren one day. Randy Williams says lucky find saved him $2,000 on replacement dentures. As for vacationing here, he says it was great, apart from having to cut his shrimp into small pieces and not having to eat a steak.
