Mindy Kaling says The Office US is “inappropriate” and its characters are now “deleted”.

Mindy Kaling has reflected on the legacy of The office (USA) and claimed that many of its characters would be “canceled” today.

The series – adapted from Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s seminal British sitcom of the same name – ran from 2005 to 2013.

Kaling played Kelly Kapoor in 157 episodes of the show and also served as writer, executive producer and director.

At a performance on Good morning America Last week, Kaling was asked when she would allow her children (Katherine, four, and Spencer, two) to watch the series.

“I think maybe never,” she replied. “This show was so inappropriate. We’re always talking about – the writers that I’m still in contact with – we’re talking about how much of this show we probably couldn’t do right now.

“Tastes have changed and honestly what offends people has changed so much now. I think that’s one of the reasons the show is so popular, because there’s something fearless or taboo about what the show talks about.”

She continued, “I think when [my kids are] Teenagers will probably want them. Seems like a 15 year old boy is the biggest fan of The office at the moment.”

Kaling was then asked what she thought her character would be doing in 2022.

“I think she probably would have left Dunder Mifflin to be an influencer and then probably got canceled almost immediately,” she quipped.

“Most of the characters on this show would probably be cancelled.”

Back in 2020, an episode of The office was edited on streaming services to remove a scene where a black-faced character was seen.

The sequence in question was featured in “Dwight Christmas,” the ninth episode of the show’s ninth season.
