MIKE TYSON believes American boxing fans are expecting “a lot from” Anthony Joshua, who is still “not a walkthrough.”
Joshua 32 suffered disaster on his US debut in 2019 after being stunned by outsider Andy Ruiz Jr., 32, in New York.
He would avenge the loss six months later but lost the unified titles again on points to Oleksandr Usyk, 35, last September.
It has seen his cloak of armor disappear among a certain group of fans, with Usyk now the bookies favourite en route to their anticipated rematch.
But heavyweight icon Tyson has backed Joshua’s corner and reminded fickle fans of AJ’s threat.
He said on Joe Rogan’s podcast: “Anthony Joshua is no piece of cake. It’s just that for some reason, I don’t know, we expect a lot from Joshua.
“I think maybe because the English are so behind him and we got on the train too.
“Americans expect a lot from Joshua.”
Joshua tried but failed to outsmart his Olympic gold medalist, Usyk later questioned in tactics.
Tyson, now 55, added: “He can do so much so he’s never a lost hope. He’s dangerous, Joshua, because he’s fucking studying.
“Joshua just needs to pick up the pace a little bit. He has a damn lot of potential.”
Usyk will face Joshua with venues in revenge in July Britain and the Middle East are currently in talks.
Promoter Eddie Hearn hopes to officially announce the fight next weekas Canelo Alvarez, 31, meets Dmitry Bivol, also 31.
