Three children and their mother were shot and police believe the father is a suspect, Michigan authorities said.
Mecosta County Sheriff Brian Miller told MLive.com that evidence indicates the husband was responsible for the deaths of his children and wife, though he didn’t go into further detail Saturday.
Deputies discovered the woman and children dead and the man with a gunshot wound to the head when they responded to a call from a man with a gun and gunshots Friday afternoon, according to the county sheriff’s office.
The four family members died from gunshot wounds, police said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital.
“We have a very tight-knit community in Mecosta,” Miller told MLive.com. “There is no better place I would rather raise my children.”
An investigation is underway.
“With our first responders, almost everyone at the scene had their own children. I can tell you they took it very hard,” Miller said.
Hailey Salisbury told ABC 13 that the woman killed was her mother, Dawn Gillard, 40, and the three children were her half-siblings, 6-year-old Katelynn Gillard, 4-year-old Ronald Gillard and 3-year-old Joshua Gillard.
“I’m totally shocked. I’m so devastated,” Salisbury said.
According to ABC 13, she said the wounded man was her stepfather, Charles Gillard.
Authorities have not yet released the names of those involved.
Salisbury has also posted several videos on TikTok grieving the loss of her family members, and one video said, “I’ll find a way to talk to you before you die in jail you disgusting thing,” so the Daily Mail.
Morley Stanwood Community Schools Superintendent Roger Cole said in a letter to the community one of the victims went to the district elementary school on Saturday.
“How it happened, why it happened is not the focus of this letter,” he wrote. “Losing a life is always difficult, but when that loss is tragic and yes meaningless, it’s a lot harder to deal with.”
