Michigan man Richard Harvey is charged with shooting dead an elderly pro-life recruiter

A Michigan man shot and wounded an 84-year-old pro-life recruiter at his home last week, officials said.

The homeowner, 74-year-old Richard Harvey, turned himself in to police Friday and was charged with criminal assault and reckless firing of a firearm that caused injuries in the Sept. 20 shooting, according to Ionia County Attorney Kyle Butler.

Advertiser Joan Jacobson told police she knocked on the door of Harvey’s Odessa township home and asked the woman who answered the door to vote against Proposal 3 in November – which would change the state’s constitution to include the law to guarantee abortion in the state if passed.

Jacobson, a longtime volunteer for Right to Life of Michigan, told the Detroit News Thursday that she was told to leave the premises when she “heard a gunshot” and “felt some pain.”

She then drove herself to a local police station and was later treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound to her right shoulder, according to prosecutors.

Harvey told local news outlet WOOD-TV he accidentally shot Jacobson while she was arguing with his wife, after he told her multiple times to leave their property.

He said he heard arguing coming from his barn and fired a warning shot into a tree with his wife’s .22 caliber gun. But he said the woman “ranted and raved” and waved her clipboard wildly.

Harvey said he feared Jacobson would hit his wife with the clipboard.

“So without thinking, I went to knock it off with the rifle and my finger was still stuck in the trigger guard. It went off and hit her.”

The gun was discharged into the clipboard before hitting her, prosecutors said. Jacobson denied ever waving her clipboard.

Most abortions are illegal in Michigan under a 1931 state law. The law was suspended in May and struck down as unconstitutional earlier this week.
